DIRECTOR OF EXHIBITS

 

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is searching for an outstanding Director of Exhibits to join a dynamic team in remaking the public face of our nearly century old institution.

Holding one of largest Natural History collections in the world, we have begun a program of renovations, construction, new exhibits and programs that will transform the visitor experience at our institution.  We are engaged in a major capital project that will culminate in the opening of five new permanent exhibits by 2012.  We are also working on several gallery renovations as well a handful of smaller new exhibits. We are about to begin planning the program of temporary exhibits that will begin as the capital project concludes, including the development of exhibits and programs that will mark our centennial in 2013.  We seek an accomplished Director of Exhibits to join our dynamic team of exhibit professionals, curators and educators and to help lead our exhibit program. 

The Director of Exhibits will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ongoing exhibits program in the museum and will lead and manage the planning, development and implementation of our temporary exhibits program for 2012 and beyond.  The Director of Exhibits will join the leadership team for capital project exhibit development, and will help develop and lead project teams for various exhibits. Reporting to the Vice President, Public Programs, the Director of Exhibits will be responsible for management of exhibits staff including project managers, specialists and technicians. 

The successful candidate will bring a collaborative leadership style, outstanding communication skills, a strong track record in exhibit leadership as well as proven ability to deal with complex content.  S/he must be comfortable managing a program of varied projects that involve large and small teams comprising in-house staff, outside contractors and collaborators bringing a wide range of expertise that is tailored to each project.  The varied nature of our exhibit projects, which deal with a wide range of natural and cultural history topics and which incorporate varied design strategies, requires an engaged, flexible and collaborative management style, as well as the ability to understand and engage with varied content.  A strong background in exhibit development and experience with biological and paleontological as well as cultural/historical exhibits, including management of interpretive planning, will be important assets.  A proven track record in the management of exhibit projects, budgets and staff is a key requirement.
