Discover & Contribute as a Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer

The Natural History Museum's research and collections divisions have exciting behind-the-scenes opportunities for conscientious volunteers with special skills and aptitudes. These volunteers are key components to the Museum's future and provide invaluable support to staff and researchers.

Get started by preparing fossils, cataloguing herpetology specimens, studying gems and minerals, or assisting researchers in an assortment of other fields. Explore the different research and collections departments here.

Please be aware that behind-the-scenes opportunities are extrememly limited and an initial meeting will be required. Get involved at the Museum now as an interpretive volunteer!


We are looking for behind-the-scenes volunteers who are:

  • Detail oriented, patient, and willing to learn new skills
  • Cooperative in a team environment, but able to follow instructions closely and work independently
  • Able to commit to a set weekly schedule
  • Thirsty for knowledge and excited to work with our unique artifacts

To be a behind-the-scenes volunteer, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Commit to a regular schedule during the work week
  • Attend an informational meeting to discuss your interest
  • Make a minimum 3 month commitment (depending on dept.)
