Support Today's Scientists, Inspire Tomorrow's Scientists

When you give to the Museum, you support our scientists' research on the planet's biodiversity. You are also creating tomorrow's scientists. Our teacher resources make each field trip a learning experience, our education outreach brings the science of discovery to schools all over L.A.

Volunteering at Events and Programs

The Natural History Museum has many special events and weekend programs that need Volunteers. Exciting and engaging events and programs include Bug Fair, Butterfly Pavilion, First Fridays, Junior Scientist, Critter Club, and Curator’s Cupboard.

Every event and program holds unique opportunities for Volunteers. Some events and programs require Volunteers to work on a regular schedule, while other events and programs need Volunteers on a limited or occasional basis.

Give back to the community when you volunteer your time, talents, and knowledge. Volunteers have plenty of fun as they help our visitors enjoy a great experience at special programs and weekend programs.

What are some things that Volunteers might do at events and programs?

  • Meet and greet visitors as they begin their Museum visit. Volunteers provide information and help visitors to explore and discover our amazing Museum.
  • Inspire wonder and discovery by facilitating meaningful learning experiences for families on weekends using objects found in our Curiosity Carts.
  • Assist with fun, educational programs such as Bug Fair, Scavenger Safari, Urban Ice Age Adventures, Critter Club, Sustainable Sundays, and Junior Scientist. These types of activities need Volunteers with excellent people skills and who have a strong desire to help others.
  • Help children with art and science craft activities such as making marine biology dioramas out of household items, decorating butterflies, or making a favorite dinosaur out of who knows what!
  • Provide logistical and staff support at First Fridays, a monthly evening program for adults that presents musical entertainment and presentations on topics in science and society.
  • Help with mailings and prepare packets for the Membership Department.
  • Explore with visitors the fantastic world of butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion.
  • Plan and prepare activities for upcoming special events.

What does it take to volunteer for events and programs?

  • Excellent people skills
  • Weekend and evening availability
  • Enthusiasm to work with authentic artifacts, fossils, and specimens. Many of our Volunteers will work with the real thing when they engage visitors during weekend events or special programs. For example, Volunteers in the Butterfly Pavilion interact with visitors among dozens of free-flying butterflies!
  • Attend orientations and training sessions as needed
  • Commitment to the Museum’s mission to inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds.
