Carpenter Bee

Xylocopa spp.

Habitat: Unfinished soft woods

These impressive black bees with shiny black abdomens are larger than our local bumblebees. Like all good carpenters, they bore into wood through nail holes and unpainted furniture to make a home for their young. Sometimes you're lucky and you'll see a male carpenter bee (aka teddy), which are tan instead of black.
