Habitat: Ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams
These native turtles, which bask on logs and munch on insects and aquatic vegetation, can live for 70 years or more. They do just fine in California's many seasonal streams and rivers. When water gets scarce, this turtle likes to bury itself in the mud or under a log. This native turtle is declining across its entire range because of habitat modification and impacts of urbanization, such as roads and increased encounters with people, cars, dogs, and raccoons.
