The Advocate

Caroline Thrasher, Gallery Interpreter, shares the story of The Advocate magazine and its legacy of LGBTQ+ visibility in the media.

Caroline Thrasher (she/her) is a Gallery Interpreter at NHMLAC. While her favorite thing to talk about at the Museum is our Living Collection, she is also passionate about art, photography, and entertainment media. “Magazine covers are perfect snapshots of what’s happening in history and culture. I chose to talk about The Advocate because too often history is told from one point of view and I feel this magazine’s goal of visibility successfully counteracts that norm. I see this magazine as an artistic statement of inclusivity, and I relate to their mission of bringing historically unseen peoples into visible media.”

HELP US DOCUMENT L.A.’S LGBTQ+ PAST AND PRESENT BY SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES

These stories are just a few representations of LGBTQ+ stories in L.A.  In every neighborhood and community, LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations have historically shaped the city, and they continue to do so today. Visit ONE Archive’s Queer Terrains to explore a map of more historic locations.

We also want to hear your stories! If you were to make a map of your LGBTQ+ L.A., what would you add? What places have shaped you and the communities you are a part of? Where do you see LGBTQ+ history being made today?

Upload a photo on your Instagram story and tell us why that place is significant to you. Tag
