The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) invite you to When Women Rise Up, a conversation between Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and NHMLAC President and Director Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga. They will discuss the 2020 election, which resulted in the historic election of Kamala Harris—the country’s first woman and person of color as Vice President—and the first-ever all-woman County Board of Supervisors. What is the significance of this political moment now and for the next 100 years? What can we learn from their own journeys as leaders, and how can women and young girls continue expanding their roles within their communities? The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A.
This event will also feature a preview of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (NHM) exhibition Rise Up LA: A Century of Votes for Women, which highlights the lives of everyday women in Los Angeles County and beyond who, over the last 100 years, advanced women's civil rights through bold action, voting, and community organizing. Following the launch of the virtual exhibition and Oral Stories archive on August 18, 2020, Rise Up LA will open onsite with NHM in 2021.
