Educators, kick off the new school year with us at the Natural History Museum!
Discover exciting updates, explore this year's School & Teacher Programs offerings, and enter our raffle for a chance to win fantastic prizes, including a bus scholarship for a student field trip to the museum. Early birds will enjoy an exclusive preview of our newest exhibit, Reframing Dioramas: The Art of Preserving Wilderness—a newly refurbished diorama hall closed since the 1980s. Program Schedule
8:30 am: Breakfast and Networking | Lower Otis Booth Pavilion, Level G | Sitting and Standing
- Check in with museum staff before entering
- Enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast and mingle with other educators

9 am–9:30 am: Teacher Preview | Reframing Dioramas: The Art of Preserving Wilderness, Level 2 | Standing and walking
- During this time, educators attending Open House will have a chance to get a sneak preview of our Reframing Dioramas: The Art of Preserving Wilderness exhibit, opening September 15, 2024! Please note: Teachers will not have access to the exhibit outside this allotted time on Saturday, September 14th.
- NHM is restoring and reopening a diorama hall that has been closed for decades. There, visitors will experience immersive new installations — by artists RFX1 (Jason Chang), Joel Fernando and Yesenia Prieto (working as a three-artist team), as well as Saul Becker and Lauren Schoth — that call attention to dioramas as a unique combination of art and science and explore biodiversity, ecology, conservation, colonialism, and changing museum display techniques.
- Reframing Dioramas is one of two groundbreaking exhibits hosted by NHMLAC combining art and science for this year’s PST ART event. The other is Mark Dion: Excavations at La Brea Tar Pits.

11 am–12 pm: Table Displays | Grand Foyer, Level 1 | Standing and Walking
- Learn about our Mobile Museum Experiences and how to apply.
- Hear from Tim Bovard, our Museum Taxidermist, and Interpretation staff member Shannon Subers about the new diorama hall and all things dioramas and taxidermy.
- Check out our dino table hosted by Erika Durazo, Senior Preparator for the Dinosaur Institute. She'll be highlighting our newest addition to the NHM family, Gnatalie the Green Dino.
- Find museum freebies and resources for your next field trip at the School & Teacher Programs table.
12 pm: Event Concludes
The open house is over, but the fun doesn't have to be! Your Teacher Sticker acts as a museum ticket for the rest of the day!
IMPORTANT WORKSHOP INFORMATION
- Our workshops fill up incredibly fast! Please only sign up if you are sure you can make it–and if plans change, email us ASAP to give your spot to someone on the waitlist.
- While we love welcoming your families to our museums, this specific program is intended for formal and informal educators (18+)
- In-person educator events are subject to cancellation due to low registration, inclement weather, or changes in safety measures.
- Participants MUST register prior to the event. There will not be registration at the door.
