Meet Hayden, the Metro Mammoth

Dr. Emily Lindsey, Assistant Curator at the La Brea Tar Pits, talks about "Hayden," a juvenile mammoth that was discovered during a dig for the Metro train along Wilshire Boulevard. Hayden lived in Los Angeles but didn't die in the Tar Pits, so his bones aren't the typical "La Brea brown" color of those we find in the Pits. He has small tusks and some of his baby teeth. Remains of Ice Age megafauna are found all around under Los Angeles, revealing what the landscape was like thousands of years before urbanization.
