Fright Nights: The Science Behind Scary Movies 
Unrequited Love with Creature from the Black Lagoon 

In celebration of the exhibition, Natural History of Horror, join us this evening as we explore the classic horror film, Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and dissect how scientific discoveries have stirred fear and inspired creativity in people past and present.  

The evening includes access to the exhibition, rare museum collection displays, special effects makeup artist demonstrations, hands-on workshop, a special performance, pre-film conversation and film screening. 

Drinks will be available for purchase and complimentary light snacks will be available while supplies last. 

SCHEDULE

5:30 pm: Doors open, guest exploration of Natural History of Horror exhibition.

6 pm: Performances by Captured Aural Phantasy Theater, ongoing art workshop with Self Help Graphics & Art Barrio Mobile Art Studio and book signing with Mallory O'Meara author of The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick (this book will be available for purchase at the Museum Store ).

7 pm: Pre-film conversation with Mallory O'Meara, author of The Lady from the Black Lagoon and artist and filmmaker Micheline Pitt moderated by Claire Dunlap, producer of Midsummer Scream Halloween and Horror Convention, followed by the film screening.

9 pm:  Program concludes.

PLEASE NOTE

  • All audiences and ages are welcome. This film is not rated and is 79 minutes.  
  • Pre-film conversation is geared towards an adult audience. 
  • The film screening will take place in one of the Museum's historic mammal halls. Seating will open at 7 pm and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be no early seating. *
