Los Angeles, CA (January 24, 2024) — The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) announced the schedule and theme for First Fridays 2024, the Museum’s once-a-month evening series featuring a mix of science, live music, signature cocktails, pop-up events and more. This season, titled From Feelings to Pheromones, begins on March 1 with an evening focused on “Animal Love” and welcomes back neuroscientist and science communicator Dr. Yewande Pearse as moderator.
Now in its 18th year, First Fridays will explore the unseen forces that shape the behaviors of life forms, large and small. From plant propagation in nature to the sex life of other species, each event will dive into and untangle constructs of gender, feelings, and pheromones. The discussions and presentations will also explore some of the predicaments facing all species of life — including over- and under-population — and offer doable solutions for everyone to participate in as a means to help maintain ecological stability.
“First Fridays is one of NHM’s most-anticipated and exciting community events, and we always look forward to seeing how it grows and expands from year to year,” said Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of NHMLAC. “Next year, that expansion will feature the inclusion of the upcoming NHM Commons, presenting a new theater, galleries, and overall footprint for the event. We encourage visitors — especially our neighbors — to come learn, explore, and celebrate with us this season ahead of the major unveiling this fall.”
Future First Fridays will take place on April 5 (“The Nature of Gender”), May 3 (“The Plant Clones are Coming”), and June 7 (“How We Multiply”). Each event will feature a series of engaging onsite lectures, music, art, vendors, and performances aimed at bringing together diverse audience communities to explore questions about the natural world.
First Fridays events run from 5 pm until 10 pm. Tickets for each event go on sale roughly a month beforehand and cost $20 each. Attendance is free for Members, but advanced reservations are recommended as limited tickets are available at the door.
