NHM Online Presents L.A. on Wheels, an online series celebrating the diversity of Los Angeles and its people through the lens of creative modes of transportation.

Hrach Gevrikyan has long lived by the timeless adage: "Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life." This philosophy has not only guided his path but has also shaped the vibrant community he has cultivated around his passion for cycling. A former professional road racer and an esteemed 13-time Armenian National Champion, Hrach’s unwavering dedication to the sport has been the driving force behind his life’s work. Today, his passion is reflected in an extraordinary collection of over 270 bicycles, ranging from a vintage penny-farthing to some of the most exquisite Colnagos ever crafted.

In 1988, Hrach transformed his dream into reality by founding Velo Pasadena Bicycle Shop. What began as a modest 675-square-foot store soon flourished into a cornerstone of the cycling community—a space where enthusiasts, professionals, and newcomers alike could connect, share knowledge, and fuel their love for the sport. Watch the video below to learn more about how Hrach made his dream come true.

The Journey Begins

Born and raised in Armenia, Hrach’s path to cycling was, at first, an unexpected detour. At 12 years old, he was on track to be a gymnast, but fate intervened when he borrowed his brother’s bicycle one day. What began as a simple joy ride soon evolved into a serious pursuit. Over the next several years, Hrach dedicated himself to racing, training rigorously, and ultimately claiming multiple Armenian National Championship titles.

Instead of going to gymnastics training, I ended up skipping that and going to cycling club… and I loved it.

From Armenia to America

In 1980, Hrach embarked on a bold new chapter, leaving Armenia behind to begin a new life in New York City, where he lived with relatives. It was in the heart of the city that he experienced a serendipitous encounter that would redefine his future. Hrach was put on the path of Fred Mengoni, a legendary mentor and benefactor of aspiring cyclists. Under Mengoni’s guidance, Hrach quickly made a name for himself in the competitive cycling world, participating in the Coors Classic. However, the demanding nature of professional cycling came with its share of hardships, a devastating knee injury forced Hrach to pivot from racing at the highest level. Faced with a crossroads, he turned toward a new goal—one that would allow him to remain deeply connected to the sport he loved.

Determined to stay immersed in the cycling world, Hrach began working at a bike shop in Santa Barbara. Soon after, he moved to Pasadena, where he took on a similar role in another shop. But deep down, he knew he wanted something more—his own shop, a space where he could merge his expertise with his entrepreneurial spirit. In 1988, Hrach and his wife Nevrik opened Velo Pasadena Bicycle Shop, a 675-square-foot shop located on the famous Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, CA.

The team director told me, ‘All right, if you can’t race, you have to work for me…’ and that led me to training and coaching.

Cycling as Community Building

Since the opening of Velo Pasadena in 1988, Hrach and his family have not only expanded the shop to its current 12,000 sq. ft., but they've also built a community around cycling. More than just a place to buy bicycles, it became a space for connection—through group rides, art nights, and fundraisers, fostering friendships and shared purpose. This sense of unity was especially evident when it came to supporting local efforts, as well as international efforts, such as in Armenia. The Velo Pasadena community has come together to donate and fundraise for a cause deeply personal to Hrach, demonstrating their unwavering support both on and off the bike. With the support of their found family, Velo Pasadena has donated new bikes to more than 200 children in Gyumri as well as helped disabled Armenian cyclists overseas.

I could say we are lucky, having very nice people around us... they also work with us, raising money, and we send it to Armenia.

L.A. on Wheels: A Vision for the Future

Hrach sees L.A. on Wheels as more than just people on bikes—it’s about community, health, and connection. He believes cycling is a great sport that not only keeps people active but also brings them together, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging. Velo Pasadena Bicycle Shop plays a role in supporting and partnering with communities to promote cycling and advocate for bike-friendly infrastructure. Beyond cycling, he values creating inclusive spaces and hosting events like art nights that bring together people with diverse interests. Through these efforts, he sees his shop as a hub for building relationships, supporting local causes, and strengthening community bonds.

That’s what cycling did for us, I mean, just owning a bike shop, we found so many nice people around us... it was pretty much a partnership working with the communities and the different organizations…

The Legacy of Velo Pasadena Bicycle Shop

What started as a small storefront has since evolved. Velo Pasadena's Bicycle Shop is more than just a place to buy and repair bikes—it's home to a remarkable bike museum that celebrates the history and passion of cycling. What began as a spontaneous purchase in 2000 by Hrach quickly grew into an extensive collection of over 270 bicycles, many of which have been donated by fellow enthusiasts who recognize his deep love for the sport. The museum showcases racing bikes from the 1970s onward, along with rare and historically significant pieces, including an 1800s Major Taylor bicycle, honoring one of the greatest African American cyclists in history. More than just a display of vintage frames and parts, the collection has become a gathering place for cyclists from near and far, drawing visitors from across the country who are eager to experience this hidden gem. For Hrach, the museum is a labor of love, a testament to cycling’s enduring appeal, and a space where the community can come together to appreciate the beauty, craftsmanship, and history of bicycles.

Through every race, every challenge, and every turn of the pedal, Hrach Gevrikyan has remained steadfast in his belief that a life driven by passion is a life well-lived. And indeed, through his journey, he has proven that when you do what you love, the road ahead is always worth the ride.

The community is very supportive. We love where we live.
This place is so awesome. And, again, cycling is like I said, it brings everybody together.
