Guide to the General Collections

The term "General Collections" refers to the Seaver Center's holdings of manuscript materials and ephemeral printed materials, of which there are approximately 385 collections.

Manuscript Materials: The Seaver Center collects manuscript materials relating to the history of Southern California from the earliest available to about 1940. These include, but are not limited to, letters, diaries, telegrams, memos, ledgers and other financial records, legal papers, research notes, and manuscripts and typescripts of books, scripts and short stories.

Ephemeral Printed Materials: The Seaver Center preserves a large amount of other printed material, usually referred to as ephemera, which includes pamphlets, brochures, booklets, tickets, and clippings. The bulk of the Ephemera Collection consists of materials relating to Los Angeles county and city. There is also a large amount of material for other counties in California. Topics covered include tourism and promotion to California, theatre and film, Los Angeles Olympics, and Los Angeles people and places.

General Collection (GC) numbers are assigned to the papers of individuals and families, records of organizations and businesses, and various artificial collections (i.e., collections of materials devoted to a single theme, person, event or type of record). In some instances, a General Collection relates to a Photograph Collection. When this occurs, the Photograph Collection is noted at the end of the collection description in parenthesis by number, for example (P-1).

This guide is modified and updated on a regular basis.

Los Angeles County Government Records
Los Angeles County government archival records are predominantly from the Registrar and Recorder’s Office and the Tax Collector’s Office. The holdings are incomplete. Subject matter includes court records of criminal, civil and probate cases; property and tax records including tax assessments, tax receipts, redemption of real estate certificates, land patents, deeds and mortgages; cattle brand registers and leather brand samples; mining records; voters registers and poll records; and treasurer records including journals. Significant are two large collections of incorporation records. Also there are county-issued serial publications. 1825-1985, undated.

There are over 500 items on a varied range of topics, including documents pertaining to Los Angeles and Southern California history; personal accounts and diaries; the Civil War and Reconstruction periods; World War I and II eras; and historic documents pertaining to other American locales. Some record files also include associated photographic items. 1703 - ca. 1983, undated.

GC 1001 Antonio F. Coronel (1817-1894) Papers

Mayor of Los Angeles, and California State Treasurer.

Correspondence, documents relating to Coronel's appointments to office; Los Angeles city ordinances, political handbills, posters and related materials, largely 1858‑80; deeds, papers connected with lawsuits and similar documents; telegrams; real estate maps, almanacs, lithographs, photos, and memorabilia. Includes material on the Los Angeles City Council, Los Angeles Board of Education, California State Board of Horticulture, and the Democratic Club of California. Persons prominently mentioned include Manuel Coronel, Jose G. Estudillo, Pablo de la Guerra, J.M. Guinn, Helen Hunt Jackson, Augustine Olvera, Andres Pico, Pio Pico, Manuel Rodriguez de Poli, Jose L. GC 1002 Del Valle Family Papers

Correspondence, business papers, legal papers, personal and family papers, memoranda, military documents, and material relating to Antonio Seferino del Valle (1788 1841), who came to California in the Spanish army in 1819; of his son Ygnacio, (1808 80), born in Jalisco, Mexico, who engaged in the cattle and wine businesses and held at various local and state offices in California; of his grandson, Reginaldo Francisco (1854-1938), who was also active in state politics; Ysabel Varela del Valle (Reginaldo’s mother); and other family members. Activities centered in Rancho San Francisco and Rancho Camulos, located in today’s Ventura County, California. Prominent names mentioned include Jose Carillo, Antonio Coronel, John G. Downey, Juan Forster, Andres Pico, Pio Pico, Ygnacio Sepulveda and Abel Stearns. Arranged chronologically. 1789-1929.

GC 1003 Owen C. Coy Collection
(Boxes: 157 legal, 12 letter, 7 record storage, 1 ov)

Owen Cochran Coy (1884-1952) had a long career in the field of history. He taught at Eureka High School in Northern California (1909-1913). He served as the secretary and subsequently as director for the California Historical Survey Commission from 1915-1923. He was a professor of history at the University of Southern California from 1925-1950. Following the commission’s administrative restructuring, he served as director of the California State Historical Association (CSHA) from 1923 to 1950. He served as a state technical director of the Historical Records Survey, W.P.A. in 1936. His publication work included editing Pictorial History of California and serving as editor for the CSHA serial publication, California History Nugget.

The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper clippings arranged by county and by topic. Subjects covered include the Gold Rush, transportation, and biographies. There is a strong emphasis on the California parlors of the Native Sons of the Golden West, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Daughters of the American Revolution, and women's clubs. The WPA survey work sponsored by the California State Historical Association includes a compilation of materials on California place names and landmarks. There are also many term papers written by Coy's students and arranged by subject. ca. 1925-1950

GC 1004 Dwight Franklin (1888–1971?) Collection

Magazine illustrator, museum exhibit artist, movie costume designer and set consultant.

A collection of books, pamphlets, maps, photographs, men's fashion plates, motion picture materials including the 1934 film Treasure Island and the 1947 film Sinbad the Sailor, periodicals, bulletins, prints and sketches. There are also notes pertaining to the following historical subjects: the Civil War, pirates, mountain men and ships. Much of the collection deals with western themes and costumes. Signed copy of Mark Twain’s The Stolen White Elephant is cataloged.

GC 1005 Mode Wineman Papers, 1897‑1932

Musician, photographer.

Letters, photographs, brochures, journals, memoirs, and radio transcripts pertaining to Wineman's work as a photographer. Includes correspondence with the Department of Interior regarding Wineman's photos of Yellowstone and other Western areas. There are copies of letters to Wineman from F. Marion Crawford (1897‑1900) and Edward Everett Hale (1902‑1907). The radio broadcasts are entitled, "Some Adventures with a Camera in the Great Out‑of‑doors," and "Memoirs of a Camera" (numbers 1‑3, 5‑6). Also included are Wineman's writings, "Through Yellowstone National Park into Jackson Hole Country: Narrative to Upper Geyser Basin; Followed by Original Journal..." (illustrated with camera studies); "Seven Nights in the Desert," and "Leaves from the Garden of God." There are also photos by Wineman and portraits of him.

GC 1006 Roscoe P. Conkling (1877-1971) Papers, ca. 1904‑1971

Research materials, including manuscripts and photographs, used by Roscoe P. and Margaret B. Conkling for their book The Butterfield Overland Mail, 1857‑1869; Its Organization and Operation over the Southern Route to 1861; Subsequently over the Central Route to 1866; and under Wells, Fargo and Company in 1869 published in 1947; cataloged at F 593 .C72 W.H.. There is also some information about the Conkling family, including photographs, newspaper clippings and genealogies.

GC 1007 Moses/Reed Collection, 1890‑1950

Books, maps, training manuals, published lectures, photographs, and miscellaneous military material from the collections of Major General Andrew Moses, a commander in Hawaii during the 1930s, and his son‑in‑law, Frank F. Reed, an Ordnance officer.

Deputy Marshal of the U.S. for the Southern District of California.

The bulk of the material concerns land problems, especially as related to the railroads. Also contains material on military desertions, fugitives, illegal liquor traffic and various matters related to the duties of the Deputy Marshal of the United States. 1868-1890, undated.

GC 1010 Thomas Temple Collection
(Boxes: 14 letter) Notes, transcripts, photostats and translations of original records pertaining to Spanish California, includes Mission Records. Records include baptisms, deaths, confirmations, marriages, wills, cemetery burials and random entries derived from missions as well as the Los Angeles Plaza church. San Gabriel baptism records include Indians. 1699-1899.

GC 1011 Florence Lawrence (1886‑1938) Papers, 1904‑1930

Motion picture actress who appeared in films of the Edison, Vitagraph, Biograph, Independent Motion Picture (IMP) and Lubin Companies.

Letters, fan mail, film scenarios and clippings. Much of the correspondence is with family members, including Lawrence's mother, Charlotte Bridgewood, who writes of her invention of the automatic windshield cleaner. Also includes letters from Lawrence's husband, producer Harry Solter.

GC 1012 William Surrey Hart (1864?‑1946) Papers, ca. 1889‑1947

Stage and motion picture actor, film director, author. Best known for his roles in western films.

Letters (including fan mail), literary productions, legal and financial records, scrapbooks, clippings, theater programs, and other materials relating to the life and career of Hart. Hart's correspondence includes letters from Wyatt Earp and Thomas H. Ince. Paul Conlon's (Hart's publicist) correspondence with newspaper editors and others is also part of the collection. There are manuscripts and typescripts of many of Hart's writings, including the manuscript for his autobiography, My Life East and West. Legal documents relate to Hart's various lawsuits, including Hart vs. Thomas Ince and Hart vs. United Artists. Financial records include documents pertaining to Hart's life at his ranch in Newhall, California, and to his career (there are records from the Famous Players‑Lasky Corporation and from the William S. Hart Company). The clippings and scrapbooks describe, for example, Hart's film appearances, his marriage to and separation from Winifred Westover, and his decision to remain retired, rather than returning to films. Additionally, there are two Mary Ellen Hart (Hart's sister) diaries that contain only brief passages.

Upham graduated in 1918 from the State Normal School in Los Angeles to become an elementary school teacher.

GC 1100 Behrendt Christmas Card Collection

Sam Behrendt was a successful insurance salesman in Los Angeles in the teens and twenties. As early as 1924 he operated the Behrendt-Levy Company, which underwrote about 75% of the movie industry's insurance. He was a second-generation Angeleno, as his father was a German-born Los Angeles pioneer of 1852, Caspare Behrendt.

Primarily Christmas cards and holiday cards received by Behrendt; some senders were well-known names in the movie industry. 1926-1928.

GC 1101 Thomas E. New (b. 1886) Papers, 1901‑1963 (Bulk: 1937‑1942)

New was involved in mining and radio and scientific instrument design and construction.

Correspondence, financial records, manuscripts, printed material, and photographs. Correspondence is between New and his family (his wife Minnie, daughter Vinita, and son Billy), friends and business associates. New's outgoing letters are carbon copies of the originals. Subjects discussed in the letters include family matters, such as the difficulties stemming from the long term separation of Thomas New, living in Arizona, from his family, living in California. Also disciplinary problems with his son and the pull between job and school for his daughter. New also discusses his need to earn money and some of his pursuits toward that end including mining, developing "treasure finding" instruments, and writing a manuscript called "The Treasure Hunter's Manual." Most of the manuscripts are New's writing on various scientific topics and inventions.

GC 1108 Animation Collection

This artificial collection pertains to the history animation and cartoons. There are background scenes; cels, sequential drawings; several scripts with the scenes and corresponding dialogue; and photographs including a sequential set labeled “Bray, 1911.” There is an emphasis in the collection of the early animation work of Walter Lantz; other noteworthy items include the work of Leon Schlesinger Productions (pre-Warner Bros.) and Fleischer Studios. There are two later cartoon examples: an Al Capp comic strip engraving plate (1988) and a Hanna-Barbera Productions storyboard (1992). 1911 – 1992, undated; (bulk is before 1935).

Diary kept by David M. Hughes on board the S.S. Tolten while touring the South Pacific. Contains typed notes, black/white photos and maps. The diary began on Sept. 29, 1938 and ended on Jan. 6, 1939.

GC 1110 Hugo Reid Collection
(Boxes: ½ legal)
Hugo Reid (1811?-1852) left Scotland at the age of eighteen and settled in California in 1832. He married a woman of the Gabrielino tribe and became a rancher and owner of Rancho Santa Anita, near the San Gabriel mission in Los Angeles County.

Correspondence along with letters to the editor of "Star" newspaper. Topics emphasize customs and the treatment of Mission Indians. Signatures are Hugo Ried [sic] and P. Hugo Ried [sic]. Primarily undated, with one sheet dated 1852.

GC 1115 Warren C. Shearman City Views Collection

Warren C. Shearman (d. March, 1963) was a professional engraver. He was a noted collector of rare books, maps, and manuscripts.

Birdseye views and maps, primarily European cities from 16th and 17th centuries. Also covers Asia and North Africa. Also eight sets of portraits of European rulers. Letter-size boxes contain photographs and negatives of the collection. Also two notebooks "Pictorial Americana, 1492-1822, An Exhibition" along with correspondence dated 1957-61. ca. 1206-1961, bulk is 1500-1700.

GC 1124 Stephen Mallory White Scrapbooks, 1894‑1900
(Boxes: 9 volumes in 2 legal and 1 ov)

San Francisco‑born lawyer who practiced in Los Angeles, where he also became prominent in Democratic Party politics. He served in the U.S. Senate (1893‑99), where he championed the creation of a harbor for Los Angeles at San Pedro.

These scrapbooks contain correspondence, pamphlets, clippings, speeches, invitations, and other material relating to White's political career, particularly during his term as U.S. Senator. The bulk of the material concerns his involvement in the "Free Harbor controversy." Also contains materials on his involvement in the Democratic Party and the U.S. presidential election of 1896. Correspondents include William Jennings Bryan and Leland Stanford.

GC 1124-A Hortense Sacriste White Letters, 1874‑1935 (Bulk: 1877‑1882)

Collection of letters written to Hortense Sacriste, later Hortense Sacriste White. Many of the letters are from male admirers before she married. Writers include George H. Bonebrake, James C. Kays, Reginaldo F. del Valle, James W. Dunn, John A. Fanning, Maurice O'Brian, and R. M. Pogson. There are also letters of condolence after the deaths of Hortense S. White's husband Stephen M. White (1901) and mother (1935). One folder contains financial records.

GC 1126 "Memories: Will Rogers" Scrapbook, 1879‑1935
(Boxes: 1 ov)

Rogers was a circus and vaudeville performer turned movie actor. He was also a humorist and social commentator.

Newspaper and magazine clippings relating to Rogers' career and death, and to the numerous tributes and memorials to him after his death. All the clippings appear to have been collected at the time of his death in 1935 and in the years immediately following. Bound in leather with tooled portrait of Rogers on cover. 1935-1961.

GC 1127 Joseph Pomeroy Widney Scrapbooks, 1870‑1890
(Boxes: ½ legal; 1 ov; 1 scrapbook in ov)

Widney was Los Angeles’ first health officer; he joined his brother (Judge Robert M. Widney) in founding the University of Southern California, and he became USC's second president. He also worked to develop San Pedro as the city's harbor, and served as President of the Los Angeles Board of Education and of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.

Scrapbooks contain correspondence and clippings, including many speeches made by Widney, on a variety of topics. Includes material pertaining to proposals to divide California into two states, Wilmington/San Pedro harbor improvements, education (including a proposal of a State university at Elysian Park), medicine and climate in California, and transportation development in Southern California. Correspondents include Leland Stanford. Additional items filed with the collection (however not contained in the scrapbooks) include a property title search for the Widney property at First Street between Spring and Main Streets. The title search was performed by the Title Insurance & Trust Co. in 1902, and shows title ownership back to 1849. Also a clipping of a "Map of the Southern Pacific Railroad" from a newpaper, 1876. 1870-1890, 1902.

GC 1129 State Council of Defense, Women's Committee Records

The state's Council of Defense reported to the Council of National Defense in Washington. The Women's Committee operated within the state council.

Records of California's State Council of Defense and the state division of the Women's Committee, with its headquarters at 719 So. Hill Street, Los Angeles, Calif. Correspondence, reports, receipts and cancelled checks. Ledger; activity book, June 1917-January 1919; checkbook, 1919. Pamphlets and other ephemera. The State Council worked on domestic issues during the war years, including Americanization; child welfare; food administration; education; educational propaganda; girls war service; health and recreation; home economics; information and library; liberty loans; publicity; Red Cross; social agencies; and women in industry. 1917-1919.

GC 1132 Leah Hellman Meyberg Scrapbook, ca. 1885‑1901

Leah Hellman Meyberg was the daughter of Isaiah M. Hellman (d.1890). Her older siblings, were in the following order, Emma, Bertha, Camilla, and Marco. Their father came to Los Angeles from Bavaria, Germany about 1854; all his children were born in California. He was a merchant and also appointed to City Treasurer. His younger cousin was Isaias W. Hellman. The Hellmans are considered Jewish pioneers of the city. Leah Hellman died while giving birth to a daughter. The Concordia Club formed in May, 1891 and maintained a membership limited to 100 persons from prominent Los Angeles Jewish families. The club dissolved about 1916.

Letters, notes, photographs, dance cards, and other memorabilia pertaining to Leah Hellman, including her marriage to Eugene V. Meyberg. Several items tell of events sponsored by the Concordia Club.

The Los Angeles County chapter of the Four-Minute Men was headquartered at 719 So. Hill Street, Los Angeles. The chairman was Marshall Stimson.

Los Angeles County chapter of the World War I Committee on Public Information, Division of Four-Minute Men, a group of men organized to give four-minute long speeches on various subjects related to war efforts on the home front including Liberty Loan and "the meaning of America." Bulletins and correspondence, but primarily report cards completed by speakers with the following information: name of speaker, venue, date, time, number of people in attendance, and topic. Also statistical report cards completed by the county chairman to be sent to the state level. 1914-1918.

McFarland (1867-1924) entered West Point in 1884 and graduated in 1888. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in his military career.

Correspondence, photographs, clippings and military documents relating to the career of Munroe McFarland, United States Army. Subject matter includes cadet life at West Point in the 1880s; army life in South Dakota. There are photographs of the Battle of Wounded Knee, 1890, published by Northwestern Photograph Company, Chadron, Nebraska, and a group photo, 1890, with Buffalo Bill. There are personal travel photos taken abroad in 1912.

Los Angeles attorney who received an A.B. and A.M. at St. Louis University before studying law at Harvard University.

Four annotated scrapbooks (three are labeled: volume 1, 5 and 6) with indexes, containing clippings, letters, memorabilia, and some photographs pertaining to Collins, his lineage, and his career as an attorney. There is information about Collins' membership and participation in various patriotic societies including the Sons of the Revolution, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Order of Descendants of Colonial Governors. There are also printed materials pertaining to the Harvard Club of Southern California. There is a biographical sketch of Collins (vol. 5, p. 167), and a 1906 photograph of him in his Los Angeles law office (vol. 5, p.78). The unnumbered volume (oversized) covers the period from ca. 1875‑ ca. 1918 and primarily contains political cartoons and cards from hotels across the country. There is also a printed portrait of Collins; Collins' report cards from St. Louis University, 1861‑65; a manuscript of "Bylaws of Company `E,' First Regiment Illinois State Guard" written by Collins when he was captain of the regiment; and a printed and holograph Illinois State Militia bill (1879) with a "memoranda concerning this document" in which Collins details the history of the proposed bill.

GC 1139 Benjamin Cummings Truman (1835‑1916) Scrapbooks 1875‑1885

Rhode Island born journalist who wrote for the New York Times and San Francisco Bulletin before becoming editor of the Los Angeles Evening Express and owner of the Los Angeles Star (1837‑77). He became a press agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1879.

Five scrapbooks. Four of the five scrapbooks (labeled "F," "G," "H," and "I") contain clippings about railroads in the United States. The clippings are from California papers (including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Stockton Independent, Oakland Evening Tribune, and the Los Angeles Journal), as well as papers in other states. The articles address many subjects pertaining to railroads, such as labor relations, questions of land ownership, legislation, and taxation. The Southern Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad Company are mentioned often. The fifth scrapbook, labeled "Fiction," contains short stories, most of which are undated and do not list an author.

The Ambassador Hotel opened in 1921 in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Preservationists including the Los Angeles Conservancy were unsuccessful in preventing its demolition in 2005.

Photographs, correspondence, press releases, clippings, and memorabilia collected by Jean Stinchfield, Publicity Director, Ambassador Hotel. Primarily photographs of celebrities and political figures; the collection omits the year 1968 when presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was fatally shot while campaigning at the hotel, however, there is an earlier photograph of John F. Kennedy at a podium. Memorabilia includes ephemera, programs and miscellaneous publications; materials reflect: the history of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub (including the Grove’s re-opening in 1957); the breadth of hotel events for organizations and international affairs (including the first Japanese-American debutante ball, the Richard M. Nixon visits in 1958 and 1960, and the Nikita Khrushchev visit in 1959); the establishment of the hotel’s permanent press room; hotel employees in photos and publications; Stinchfield’s biographical files; and a taped interview with her in 1987. Most of the materials were collected by Stinchfield in the course of her years employed, however, there are early photographs and memorabilia dated prior to her time with the hotel. 1921-1987, undated. GC 1149 Charles Louis Ducommun (1820?‑1896) Collection, 1839‑1977

Swiss born businessman who arrived in Los Angeles in 1849. He established a watch repair shop on Commercial Street which grew into a flourishing general merchandising store. Ducommun was a director of the Los Angeles Water Company, the Main and Agricultural Park Railway, the Pioneer Oil Company, and a founder of the Farmers and Merchants Bank.

Account books, ledgers, deeds, certificates of title, stock certificates, stock lists, photographs, hardware catalogs and other material pertaining to the history of the Ducommun store and its subsequent business entities. There are a few personal items from Ducommun and his family, including his passports, certificate of citizenship and family photographs. There are a few short histories of Charles Ducommun and the Ducommun business, including one written by Charles E. Ducommun. Some of the items are photoprints, rather than originals. Bulk dates 1852‑1906.

Graves (1852-1933) was a prominent resident of Los Angeles and president of the Farmers & Merchants National Bank for twelve years. He wrote My Seventy Years in California. He was a member of the executive committee of the Los Angeles Clearing House Association for over twenty years and was its president in 1907. He was custodian of all securities of the National Currency Association of Los Angeles during the World War.

GC 1302 Los Angeles Registry of Burials, 1869-1885

Book containing the registry of deaths in Los Angeles in the public cemetery from 1869 to 1879 and in private cemetery grounds from 1879 to 1884. The book was donated to the museum in 2000 as the registry has been preserved on microfilm in the County Clerk’s office, LA County. Some or all of the graves listed in the registry may have been moved from Fort Moore Hill to Rosedale Cemetery. The book is in fragile condition and should be handled as little as possible. A photocopy of the entire registry is enclosed in the box with the volume.

"Los Angeles Town" was a song self-promoted by a Daytona Beach, Florida songwriting pair, Billy Cude and Watie Riley Pickens during the city's 1981 bicentennial. Anastasio Avila received the Mexican land grant, Rancho Tajuata, also known as Rancho de Los Cuervos, located in the present-day Watts district of the city of Los Angeles.

Documents, receipts and other items from the estate of Josefa Avila. Also postcards and two portraits. She was the daughter of Jose Maria Avila [died ca. January, 1900] and Francisca Avila [died 1916.] The papers provide a snapshot of the Avila family, including the real estate transactions to sell off portions of Rancho Tajauta. Spanish surname spelling variant: Abila. English and Spanish. 1814-1943, undated (bulk 1871-1916).

Italian-American interior decorator (1889-1936), who designed the home of celebrities, including hatmaker G. Henry Stetson. He also designed the Mediterranean Home Exhibit of the Janss’ real estate development, Westwood Hills. He was employed by Barker Brothers Furniture. He was active in civic projects to further the arts as well as Italian culture by participating in the Artists’ Council of the Civic Bureau of Music and Art; he presided over the International Artists’ Club; he designed the interiors for the 1932 International Olympics Ball in Los Angeles and the 1928 Pacific Southwest Exposition. He facilitated crowning actress Mary Pickford as queen of the 1931 California Artists’ Frolic and Ball in Hollywood.

Pénélon (1827–1885) was a Frenchman who arrived in Los Angeles in 1853 and thrived as a Daguerre photographer. He was also a self-taught portraiture artist who was commissioned by many prominent Californios. Tax records with several attributed to Pénélon along with Adrien Davoust. 1859–1868 and undated.

GC 1335 Japanese Friendship Doll Records

Photographs, literature, a book, Dolls of Friendship, and a 1927 “Passport of Goodwill” for the doll called “Miss Taiwan”. The doll is in the Material Culture collection of the History Department. It represents one of a group of dolls sent by Japan on a “World Friendship Among Children” tour of the U.S. When the itinerary of the U.S. was completed the dolls making up the group were distributed at points where they had been shown. “Miss Taiwan” was received through First Congregational Church at Eighth and Hope Streets. Important note: In October, 2018 the doll was re-identified as "Miss Hyogo" and not "Miss Taiwan." See the article on the discovery of the doll's actual identity.

GC 1338 Earl Theisen Collection on the History of Motion Pictures

Earl Theisen (1903-1973) served as Honorary Curator of Theatrical Arts at the museum for a few years following 1931. Theisen was a technician at the Dunning Process Plant, a member of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, and a member of the Society’s Historical Committee. Much of the film collections in the Seaver Center and the History Department were acquired as a result of his efforts.

Correspondence, movie programs, studio press releases, studio forms and passes, clippings from his articles in the International Photographer (1933-1936), reproductions of movie house title cards (including advertisements for “Angel of Hell’s Kitchen” (Hart), “The Eyes of the World” (Wright), “By-Gone Days of An Engine House” (Grauman), and “The Clansman” (Griffith)), and some photographs. GC 1340 George E. Van Guysling (d.1946) Collection, ca. 1850-1927

Van Guysling managed the New England office of American Mutoscope and Biograph in 1901. By 1904 he became General Manager of the New York office. Various sources cite the establishment of a Los Angeles branch in late 1905 or early 1906 whereby Van Guysling, his brother Archibald, and another associate, Otis M. Gove, ran the West coast operation. Their early film association in Los Angeles preceded the better-known work of the Selig Company, and the collection contains six photographs and a handbill for the little-known first moving pictures made in Los Angeles in 1906.

The collection is primarily an assortment of documents relating to the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company and items of the British Mutoscope and Biograph Company. There are items pertaining to incorporation matters for both companies, catalogs, and the related film industry. There is a scrapbook of press clippings, 1898-1900, with photo event coverage including the Second Boer War in South Africa. There is a continuous 15-foot band for a peep show. Other non-moving picture items in the collection include Abraham Lincoln prints, a Civil War-era wet collodian negative, Brady negatives and prints, a Millard Fillmore print (housed in the mc folder) and large-size tintypes. ca. 1850-1927, undated, (bulk is 1898-1926).

GC 1344 Nash Motors Company Records

Jeffery produced its first automobile in the U.S. in 1902. In 1916 the Jeffery Company was sold to the Nash Motors Company which moved its headquarters to Kenosha.

The records of the Thomas B. Jeffery Company of Kenosha, Wisconsin and its successor company, the Nash Motors Company of Maryland. Notable are clippings, correspondence, patent records and lawsuit records beginning in 1902 for challenges by George B. Selden’s patent to automobile manufacturers. 1890-1938.

Galarza (1905-1984) was a Mexican immigrant and a graduate of Occidental College in 1927. He wrote an autobiography Barrio Boy and other books and articles. He championed on behalf of farm workers.

Collection of photocopied papers, correspondence, and photographs pertaining to Dr. Ernesto Galarza compiled by Estrada in the course of his research; also papers on the 1987 symposium and exhibit at Occidental College honoring the achievements of Galarza. GC 1350 Moreno Family Collection

Ezequiel Moreno left Zacatecas, Mexico, with his family in 1915, like many other Mexicans to escape the revolution. He forged a business selling and delivering Mexican bread and eventually opened Restaurante La Esperanza at 507 No. Main Street, in the plaza area and historic heart of Los Angeles. Later, four addition locations were established throughout the city.

One menu, along with photographs, digital photographic prints and photocopied images; clippings; one typescript on the history of La Esperanza Bakery, first established in Los Angeles by Ezequiel Moreno. Collection primarily focuses on the bakery and also John Moreno (d. 1999), who held public office as Assemblymember for the 51st district of Los Angeles County. ca. 1918-1999, undated.

Lawrence (1903-1987) was a reporter for the Hearst newspapers in the 1930s and served as advertising and publicity chief for Samuel Goldwyn. From 1939 to 1942 he was public relations director for the Motion Picture Producers Association. During World War II, he became Chief Public Relations Officer European Theater of Operations in the United States Army.

The CRA/LA, a Designated Local Authority donated artwork to various southern California cultural institutions that were previously owned by the now-dissolved former agency, the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles. NHM received a portion, including the original art on paper managed by the Seaver Center but also paintings and other works of art managed by the Material Culture section of the History Department.

The CRA/LA Collection of Original Art on Paper consists primarily of photographs particularly silver gelatin and ambrotype prints. Watercolor and pastel; mixed media; linocut and block print; letterpress, serigraph; and cel vinyl on acetate. Subject matter and locale covers the city of Los Angeles, California. GC 1361 Darling Motor Company Records, 1916-1917

Omer Foy Darling founded the company in Dayton, Ohio. He took over a former Wright-Martin airplane factory.

Company papers include correspondence, customer reservation forms, sales contracts, clippings; the first drawing of the automobile; photographs; one sales brochure; one metal radiator badge. The records cover the onset of business and production of the Darling car.

GC 1362 Charles E. Duryea and J. Frank Duryea Papers, 1894-1944

Charles E. Duryea (1861-1938) and J. Frank Duryea (1869-1967) collaborated in Springfield, Massachusetts to build a gasoline-powered motor vehicle in 1892. Frank contended that he alone successfully invented the car.

Publications, advertising booklets, correspondence and ephemera. An artificial collection about the Duryea brothers and their contributions to the start of the automobile industry in the United States. 1894-1944, undated.

Some papers document the Kiwanis Club of Springfield, Massachusetts, that honored Charles in 1937 as the "Father of the Automobile". The state governor’s office sought to lay a plaque to similarly honor Charles in 1942. Several publications from the 1940s reveal the rivalry between the brothers, with the surviving younger brother Frank’s attempts to correct the historical fact. These publications contain reprinted manuscripts, typescripts, clippings, letters and notarized affidavits attesting to Frank’s involvement as inventor and his contention that his older brother fabricated lies. Correspondence includes those received and written by the museum curator of Physical & Mechanical Sciences. Contact the Detroit Public Library, National Automotive History Collection, for Charles E. GC 1363 J.V. Rhoades Employment Agency Records

The Rhoades Employment Agency operated at three locations (Denver, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles) from 1907 to about 1932. It was co-owned primarily by two brothers, Joseph V. and Louis M. Rhoades, both of whom were based in Denver. Joseph Alfredo Pacheco, whose name appeared on the Los Angeles letterhead, owned 1/6 of the company and served as both Manager and Interpreter at the Los Angeles Office at 606 N. Main Street. The agency specialized in the placement of Mexican laborers.

Company records include correspondence, receipt books, loose receipts, and work order books; one photograph portrait of an unidentified woman. English, with some documents in Spanish. The records provide primary labor data on Mexican casual workers recruited from the Plaza area in Los Angeles, California. Many of the workers were placed in urban jobs, however client correspondence also included the employer Los Alamitos Sugar Co. 1924-1931, undated.

GC 1376 Business Men’s Art Institute of Los Angeles, Art Beacon Publications

The institute was formed by downtown business men who wanted to paint as a pass time. The institute was incorporated in the 1940s and continues to this date. In its hey day it consisted of over a hundred business men of Los Angeles. As the downtown area changed in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s fewer men were willing to stay in down town and the membership diminished and currently consist of about 10 members. The institute is now located at 2228 Florencita, Montrose, California.

Two bound volumes of the publication, Art Beacon. One volume dated 1947 through 1960 (first two issues titled Palette Painter prior to name change to Art Beacon). Second volume dated November-December, 1963 through March, 1972).

GC 1378 Edna and Dorothy Deakin Correspondence

Correspondence by Edna and Dorothy Deakin, who were the daughters of artist Edwin Deakin. Letters and notecards by both sisters to Mr. Lockhart Darling, on December 30, 1942; and from December 26, 1944 through October 22, 1945. The remainder correspondence from November 11, 1945 through March, 1948 were written by the surviving sister, Dorothy Deakin to Mr. Darling. Also one photograph copy print of Edwin Deakin, his wife and two daughters. 1942-1948, undated.

According to the donor, Lockhart Darling was a wealthy Central Valley farmer from Fowler, California, who aided the Deakin sisters with financial support to support the Deakin California mission paintings by keeping them intact rather than sold off piecemeal.

GC 1379 D.G. Cathcart Collection

D.G. Cathcart served as the Chief Personal Property Appraiser with the Los Angeles County Office of the Assessor. He was a resident of Pasadena, California.

18 journal books used in scrapbook fashion to record day to day notations, news, and activities related to tax assessment, current events and personal matters. They were created during Cathcart's tenure with the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office, and they are dated 1934 - 1951. The journals contain newspaper clippings, brochures, postcards, tickets and other ephemera, some loose and others attached to pages. There are written entries and also some photographs. Beginning on page "September 2, 1951" are handwritten recollections presumably by Cathcart, highlighting details of each year on the job from 1924 through 1950.

Two additional scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and photographs (photos of County Assessor Ed Hopkins and other Assessors from throughout California.)

GC 1380 El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, Los Angeles Fire Department Records

Primarily original photographs, cabinet cards, photograph albums, copy prints, enlargements, two digital scans and negatives relating to the Los Angeles Fire Department and the history of firefighters in Los Angeles. Depicted are firemen, fire trucks, firefighting apparatus, fire houses and hose companies, oftentimes seen in parades, but also in fire battle scenes. Two publications include an informative booklet "Los Angeles Fire Department, 1892" and an annual report of the Board of Fire Commissioners, 1896. A small number of photographic items are not related to firefighting. The Bank of Finance was founded in Los Angeles in 1964 and became the first African American owned and operated bank in the West. The founder, Onie B. Granville (1916-1998), was a prominent businessman beginning with the establishment of a local realty firm in 1949.

Coverage on the development and marketing of the Cadillac automobile brand and heavily on the news, advertisements and activities of Don Lee Cadillac, a dealership. Geographic coverage is Los Angeles, the Bay area of northern California and also nationally.

GC 1383 Historical Society of Southern California Collection (2018 Donation)

The organization was formed in 1883 to collect and preserve manuscripts, periodicals, newspapers, and both written and oral historical accounts regarding the history of the Pacific Coast in general and of Southern California in particular. The collection is one of the founding collections of the Natural History Museum. The Historical Society of Southern California (HSSC), along with the Fine Arts League, the Southern Division of the Cooper Ornithological Club, and the Southern California Academy of Sciences entered into an agreement with the County of Los Angeles on February 7, 1910 to build a historical museum and art gallery.

The collection is comprised of the Historical Society of Southern California (HSSC) business archives (1890s-2017), and books, ephemera, photographs and manuscripts all collected by the HSSC. The organization was formed in 1883 to collect and preserve manuscripts, periodicals, newspapers, and both written and oral historical accounts regarding the history of the Pacific Coast in general and of Southern California in particular. The collection is arranged into five series primarily by format: Manuscripts, Photographs, Ephemera, Books, with the exception being the HSSC Business Archives.

She proved to be a valued employee for more than 40 years working in the secretarial field in Health Services, Sheriff, and ultimately attained the position of Executive Secretary to the Chief Executive Officer.

Published in Culver City by a Colombian family and other staff: Aura Ramirez Forastieri, Maria Iannone, F.J. Iannone, Anita Duran de Jones, Lucia de Ruiz, Sarah Hobson, and Antonio Ruiz. GC 1391 Oki Family Papers

Kazuichi "Jack" Oki, his wife Yayoi, and their daughter Lily (Tsurumaki) and son Kazuto, resided in the Silverlake district of Los Angeles, California. The attack on Pearl Harbor led to their incarceration at Heart Mountain, Wyoming.

Correspondence, publications, manuscripts, and two albums. The collection reflects the family's lifelong appreciation for the visual arts and the natural world of rocks and minerals. Papers indicate Jack Oki's involvement in the gardener profession. But mostly the papers show Oki's activities as president of the Southern California Japanese Rock Society and their 1964 nature study tour of various national parks. Also the Oki's trip with the Lapidary Society to Mexico in 1978. Also publications on the Hollywood Independent Church and the Union Church of Los Angeles. Albums show Japanese design and batik samples. Some items in Japanese. 1952-1980, undated

Four-S Bakery was founded in Los Angeles in 1922. Donor John Mieding began at Four-S and finished his career as Western Regional Manager of Interstate Brands Corporation. Four-S Bakery first merged with other baking companies into Western Bakeries and later Interstate Bakeries Corp. (reorganized into Interstate Brands Corporation).

Business records and photographs pertaining to Four-S Bakery, Interstate Brands Corporation, Good Stuff Bakery, and Good Stuff Food Company, Inc. Covers operations and statistics of the bread and commercial bakery industry in southern California. Contains a manuscript titled "A Story About a Bakery, Four-S Bakery, 1922-2000" written by Elmer Pedrotti, Joe Tarro and John Mieding, chronicling company history and subsequent mergers through facts, anecdotes, humor, and remembrances. Also a collection of dinner programs/menus from the Les Amis d'Escoffier Society. 1942-2005, undated (bulk 1963-1995)

GC 1393 Peter Aguilar Despart Papers

Despart (1906-1997) was an Angeleno of Sicilian/Mexican heritage. He was a descendant of Los Angeles Mayor Cristobal Aguilar. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Photographs, letters, clippings, ephemera, commendations and documents in original, copy, and digitized format. Also research print-outs compiled by the donor. Papers relate to a Mexican circus; Despart's local restaurant businesses; his military service in World War II and the Korean War; his association with several Japanese American friends during WWII; his affiliation in founding the American Legion Post 804 in East Los Angeles, California; his political career and civilian career at the Department of Water and Power. There are some minor references to the Hollywood motion picture industry. The collection strongly resonate his lifelong involvement with sports and team athletics that took place at many well-known southern California venues and in Mexico. 1930-1994, undated
